Alan Richard Winde is a South African politician and businessman, currently serving as the 8th Premier of the Western Cape since 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he has represented the province in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999. Born in Knysna, he began his career by establishing small businesses in his hometown before entering local politics in the early 1990s as a municipal and district councillor. Over the years, he has held various leadership roles in the DA’s provincial caucus and was appointed Provincial Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism in 2009, later serving as Provincial Minister of Economic Opportunities from 2014 to 2018.
In September 2018, Alan Winde was named the DA’s Premier candidate for the Western Cape and shortly after was appointed Provincial Minister of Community Safety. Following the party’s victory in the May 2019 provincial elections, he was elected Premier on 22 May 2019, succeeding Helen Zille. He is the second DA leader to hold this position, continuing to focus on governance, economic growth and safety in the province.
