Pieter Mattelaer is the deputy group leader of the Project Portfolio Management group at CERN, which is responsible for all large construction projects on the CERN site. Pieter obtained master’s degrees in civil engineering from UC Berkeley (USA) and architectural engineering from KU Leuven (Belgium). He started his professional career at Arup in London, and after 10 years spent in consulting engineering in the UK & California (USA), he joined DEME Offshore, an international EPCI contractor based in Belgium. In 2015, he moved to Switzerland to lead the civil works for CERN’s High Luminosity LHC project from concept design until completion in 2023. Pieter’s professional experience spans across different parts of the construction sector, and he worked on both above ground and underground projects, as well as onshore and offshore. He is currently also preparing the design & construction of two new mixed-use tertiary buildings on CERN sites in Switzerland and France.
