There is increasing recognition that the two greatest challenges of our time – climate change and biodiversity loss – cannot be meaningfully addressed without a fundamental shift in how we conceptualise, design and construct our infrastructure.  

In 2023 FIDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, World Wildlife Fund, and AECOM developed an award winning ‘living playbook’ to expand global recognition of nature-positive infrastructure approaches for years to come. 

The playbook provides an insight into the global state of play and acts as a tool for supporting the implementation of nature-based solutions. It also represents the exciting starting point of a much more ambitious goal of creating a ‘living playbook’ that will continue to expand global recognition of nature-positive infrastructure approaches for years to come as we progress towards new solutions and construction techniques that are truly nature-positive. 

This year, we launch the latest addition to this living playbook. This new section on procurement, will set out how client-side actors – funders, developers, government departments and agencies, and contractors – can now incorporate significant content on nature-positive infrastructure into their procurement process project briefs and scopes of work, thereby ensuring that nature is front of mind during infrastructure planning and design, rather than an afterthought. 

The report finds there are four key themes and messages that are needed to improve the implementation and development of nature positive infrastructure solution. Join us to debate this latest addition and get insight into where we are going next.
