In 2022 FIDIC produced its Digital disruption and the evolution of the infrastructure sector State of the World report. This report outlined not only the pace of change but also the role of technology as a potential disrupter to industries changing their business model as a result of shifts in technology, data and/or how a combination of how customers/clients and the sector can access and use such information. It is, however, not only important to recognise that change is constant, but also that if we are going to meet challenges such as net zero, it is inevitable. In this latest State of the World report, we explore the practical role technology currently has in the development of infrastructure and also how this will change as we move forward with increased retrofitting, carbon reduction and increasing cooperation.

FIDIC’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Council (DIAC) promotes inclusion and diversity for a sustainable, transparent and more profitable engineering industry. It plays a key role in supporting wider representation and inclusion from more diverse groups as influencers in the consulting engineering industry and advocates for why diversity and inclusion matters to business and its benefits. Back in the 1800s, electricity distribution was a short-range business, driven by nearby DC generators. That changed in 1895, when the first facility to send high-voltage alternating current over long-distance transmission lines became operational. Yet most modern appliances use DC to operate and with developed, advanced emerging and emerging countries increasingly installing local renewables, considering battery storage (either as a separate entity or as part of vehicles) the question is - will DC systems make a comeback?  What a DC future might look like?  

The FIDIC International Financial Institutions Committee works with international financing institutions (IFIs) and related organisations in the development of policies, guidelines and processes to improve financial management, procurement and enable implementation of innovations and best practice. The committee also monitors changes in the priorities of IFIs and identifies relevant topics to which FIDIC should contribute or address as a strategic priority. This free-to-attend webinar on Tuesday 31 October 2023 will address relevant and key issues in the IFI arena and is open to all global engineering, construction, infrastructure, finance and legal professionals. FIDIC’s Sustainable Development Committee advises the consulting engineering industry on how it may develop strategies, tools and training to maximise its contribution to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The committee also provides a forum for consulting engineers to share ideas about how they can enable mitigation, adaptation and resilience to climate change to develop and maintain buildings and infrastructure assets and heritage. This free webinar on Tuesday 21 November 2023, is being held in the run-up to the next COP28 climate conference and will look at some of the emerging sustainability issues likely to be discussed at the conference in Dubai. The FIDIC Integrity Management Committee FIDIC raises awareness of and advocate on the fight against corruption in the global construction market and liaises with consulting engineers, construction contractors, suppliers, international financial institutions, international development and assistance agencies and governments. The committee also highlights and promotes effective tools and strategies for curbing the supply side of corruption and gives a platform to those taking concrete steps to address this scourge on the industry. This free-to-attend webinar on Tuesday 12 December 2023, taking place just after the UN International Anti-Corruption Day, will review the latest state of play in the global fight against corruption and share best practices.
